Assistant Professor of Computer Science

Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University (RUC), invites applications for a position as assistant professor of Computer Science from the 1st of November 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is limited to a period of 3 years.

Department of People and Technology is the largest department at Roskilde University and covers a range of subject areas, broadly focused on human – society – technology interactions and covering topics as sustainable transitions of society, social entrepreneurship, urban planning, computer science, digitalization, healthcare, welfare studies, etc. The position is linked to the research group Programming, Logic, and Intelligent Systems (PLIS). In PLIS, basic research in computer science is combined with innovative applications. The research in the PLIS group concerns the following topics:

  • Artificial Intelligence and decision support tools
  • Big data analysis and data science
  • Analysis of programming languages and program properties
  • Interaction design
  • Logic and knowledge modelling
  • Complex IT systems, databases and IT security
  • Innovative applications of IT and Internet of Things

Responsibilities and tasks
The assistant professor’s work will primarily consist of research (with associated obligations regarding publication/scientific communication) and research-based teaching (with associated examination obligations within Computer Science). This includes a deep engagement with core areas of computer science such as algorithms, programming languages, and software development. In addition to research and research-based teaching, the position also requires sharing knowledge with the rest of society – including participation in public debate. To a limited extent, the position may also include other activities.

The ideal candidate is expected to be able and willing to teach in several of the following education programs:


An assistant professor is required to complete the educational training program for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).
 

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree within computer science or a closely related field. The successful candidate will become a member of the PLIS research group and must relate their research to that of the PLIS group. Specifically, we are seeking applicants with a research and teaching profile in more than one of the following scientific areas:

  • Fundamental principles and concepts of computer science, such as programming languages, algorithms, and data structures
  • Machine learning (ML) techniques, including explainable AI and the combination of ML and symbolic reasoning.
  • Software development/engineering, including requirements elicitation, cloud computing, and distributed systems.

 

Applicants are referred to the university’s Faculty expectations for specifications on the required level of qualifications within research, teaching, fundraising, and so forth.

The candidate is expected to master Danish (or Swedish/Norwegian) to a degree sufficient to teach and supervise in Danish and participate in administrative and collegial cooperation. Applicants not mastering Danish are expected to follow classes and reach an acceptable level of Danish during the assistant professorship. Applicants are also required to be able to research, teach, and supervise in English.

The ideal candidate shall be enterprising and possess good communication skills and be a visible, involved participant in the section’s daily activities, in addition to being willing to engage in disciplinary and interdisciplinary collaboration across the department. Experience with problem-oriented project supervision and teaching at university level is an advantage.
 

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to:

  • research topic,
  • scientific production and citations,
  • research prospective and the ability to promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education,
  • international academic experience, e.g. from reviewing academic papers or organizing research conferences/seminars,
  • ability to contribute to development of the section’s internal and external cooperation,

 

The assessment will be based upon the seven criteria in the Faculty expectations at Roskilde University: research, teaching, dissemination, administration, fund raising, collegiality, and leadership.

Terms of employment
The employment is full-time, and you will refer to Head of Department Peter Kjær.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.

After the deadline for applications the Head of Department will shortlist applicants for assessment with assistance from the recruitment committee including the chairperson of the assessment committee.

Shortly after the application deadline all applicants will be notified whether or not their application has been selected for assessment.

The shortlisted applicants will be informed about the composition of the assessment committee, and each applicant will be given the opportunity to comment on the composition of the committee and - later on - their assessment.
