PostDoc - Ethics of fisheries

We are searching for a candidate for a 2 year post doc position in the project "Ethical capture and killing methods in trawl fisheries". The project is financed by the Research Council of Norway, and is a cooperation between two Norwegian and two Dutch research institutions; SINTEF and NTNU in Norway, and Utrecht University and Wageningen University and Research in the Netherlands. The main objective of the project is to increase the knowledge about the ethical perspectives and fish welfare in relation to harvesting technologies and sustainable value creation.
The project
Limited focus has been placed on fish welfare and other ethical aspects of catching and killing processes for wild fish. This project seeks to reflect on and integrate ethics in the development of new technologies and methods, with the aim of improving fish welfare in some key phases and processes in trawl fisheries.
The projects consists of three works packages. The post doc is the key part of work package "Ethics", which will focus on establishing a framework for ethical assessment of new technology through the following research tasks:
  • analyse the (implicit) ethical assumptions that underlie the general initiatives to improve capture and killing methods and specific proposals
  • map the criteria that need to be taken into consideration in the process of developing new, improved capture and killing methods
  • make an ethical assessment of practical proposals of new capture and killing methods developed in the other two work packages of the project

The post doc will be employed at SINTEF Ocean in Trondheim, Norway, but will work closely with Prof. Franck L.B. Meijboom at Utrecht University, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Dept. of Animals in Science and Society. The work package and post doc will also be closely linked and interrelated with the two other work packages in the project, which cover the development and evaluation of new capture and killing technologies for improved fish welfare.
We are looking for a candidate who meet the following conditions:
  • obtained a PhD in (applied) ethics or in Veterinary/Animal Science with an academic master in ethics
  • has experience with working in an interdisciplinary team
  • is able to speak and write in English on an academic level
  • has a pro-active and independent attitude. You like to work in a team, but also are able to work in an independent way and are able to make decision without direct supervision
We offer
  • challenging tasks in an interdisciplinary research environment
  • exciting national and international projects
  • good opportunities for development
  • competitive salary, pension and life insurance plans and flexible working hours
