Assistant Professor in research practices and social sustainability

Department of People and Technology, Roskilde University, invites applications for a position as fixed term 3-year position as assistant professor from the 1st of October 2022, or as soon as possible thereafter.

Department of People and Technology is the largest department at RUC, and covers a range of subject areas, broadly focused on human – society – technology interactions and covering e.g., sustainable transition, social interventions & entrepreneurship, urban planning, digital transformation, data science, work and health studies etc. The position is linked to the research group OrgESS – Organization, Ethics & Social Sustainability addressing the development of social sustainability as part of the societal, ecological and/or economical changes in public and private sector, and in social movements, NGOs and/or welfare institutions. The research group is multi-disciplinary within the social sciences, and works with concepts like social innovation, social sustainability, social change, future worklife, social entrepreneurship, and ethics of care. Methodologically the group has great expertise in interventionist and activist methodologies and participatory design.

We are looking for an applicant with a strong research profile related to the interdisciplinary field of responsible research and innovation approached through the perspective of social change and sustainability. The applicant will be involved in an European Alliance project RE:ERUA: https://erua-eui.eu/re-erua/

The candidate will do research affiliated with the work package 3 in RE:ERUA that has the following aim and objectives:

The aim of WP3 is to drive Re:ERUA to foster the engagement for Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) of all sectors’ organizations (like NGOs, policy makers, universities, business organisations, industry associations, science funders, researchers, etc.) and citizens through good governance, mutual learning, agreed practices and multi-actor and public engagement initiatives in research and innovation.

From the perspective of social change and sustainability we approach responsible research as social innovation and the candidate will be involved in the following tasks:

  • Exploring and analysing societal engagement in relation to the role of different stakeholders in knowledge creation and consumption, using the concepts like social entrepreneurship, social innovation, citizen science, public engagement and sustainable/social impact
  • Examining innovation initiatives in the alliance through the lens of responsible research and innovation, co-creation processes and social innovation/ entrepreneurship
  • Implementing experimental pilots on novel societal engagement approaches in collaborative research
  • Evaluation Report and recommendation of joint future action / scale up of experiments at alliance level 

We expect the applicant to participate in nurturing our work environment in OrgESS. Our research is focused in the cross-disciplinary field of social sustainability, with a particular focus on how and why cross sectoral collaboration and social innovation facilitate social changes and sustainability. We also have a strong focus on how individuals both in their private lives and work lives mobilize change and create new relations and organizing initiatives for sustainable futures.

We look for applicants that has strong interest and expertise in collaborative methods and on subjective experiences of and engagements in social changes. We encourage candidates from transdisciplinary and international research environments possessing the ability to collaborate with researchers from multiple fields of research and countries to apply for this position.

The applicant is expected to teach at 2 of the study programs where OrgESS provides teaching:

  • Social Entrepreneurship & Management (MA)
  • Social Intervention (MA)
  • Master i Socialt Entreprenørskab (MA)
  • Arbejdsliv (MA)
  • Socialpsykologi & Læring (MA)
  • Samfundsvidenskabelig Bachelor (BA)
  • Humanistisk Bachelor (BA)

Teaching tasks consist partly of project supervision and partly of course teaching, as well as meetings and planning of teaching activities. The university’s employment policy requires that employees can teach in Danish within 3 years of employment – preferably sooner.

 

Responsibilities and tasks
The assistant professor will primarily be associated to the tasks in the RE:ERUA project, as well as research-based teaching and supervision. Applicants are referred to the university’s Faculty expectations for specifications on the required level of qualifications within research, teaching, networking, fundraising, impact and outreach etc.

The ideal candidate for this position is expected to:

  • Perform research contributing to the Re:ERUA project and publish papers in leading international, peer-reviewed journals.
  • Develop and nurture research networks nationally and internationally, specifically within the frame of the ERUA project.
  • Take responsibility to strengthen the Departments profile around responsible research and social change
  • Contribute to teaching within the mentioned educational programmes
  • Actively contribute to the research environment by a visible and physical presence at the Department
  • Complete the educational training programme for assistant professors at RUC (up to 220 hours).

 

Qualifications
Applicants must hold a PhD degree or equivalent qualifications.

The applicant is expected to possess initiative and good intercultural and cooperative skills, be visible and actively contribute to organizing the daily activities in OrgESS and the connected teaching programs. The applicant should cover several of the following academic orientations:

  • Social change in the context of responsible research and the role of scientific knowledge in society
  • Intersections between subjectivity and social innovation
  • Potentials and disadvantages of collaborative research methodologies
  • Critical, societally engaged, participant involved research with qualitative and creative research methods
  • Sustainability – social, economic, environmental
  • Experience with problem-oriented project supervision and teaching at university level is an advantage.

 

Assessment
In the assessment of the candidates, consideration will be given to

  • relevance of research expertise for the Re.ERUA project and the research groups’ focus areas,
  • the ability to create, promote and utilize research results,
  • experience in teaching and education development and management,
  • the ability to create an engaged and interactive learning environment that motivate and inspire students to develop all aspects of their profiles,
  • networks, experience from international research environments and collaborative abilities

Terms of employment
The employment is on full time, 37 hours per week for 3 years and you will refer to the Dean, Andreas de Neergaard.

The position will be filled according to the Agreement between the Danish Ministry of Finance and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations (AC) and Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities.
