Advanced Fire Engineering (Maritime and Energy))
Fire Safety Engineer

Do you want to apply your skills to promote a fast and safe transition of the energy and transportation sectors away from carbon-based fuels? Do you have experience in CFD fire modelling in various settings? We have an open position you might find interesting.

Advanced Fire Engineering – Maritime and Energy is a growing department in a large Danish organization focused on fire safety and security. We continue our impact-making journey in the energy and transportation sectors, working to promote a safe and fast transition of these sectors away from carbon-based fuels to contribute to addressing climate change. We do this by running R&D projects and serving customers in these industries. We demonstrate the potential of new technologies, work with authorities and the public to promote fair and safe adoption of technologies related to renewable energy, hydrogen, batteries, ammonia, methanol, container shipping, passenger transportation and much more.

You can see examples of our work here.

We are a diverse team of professionals from varied backgrounds (engineers, social scientists, master mariners, business developers…) and 14 countries. We value a collaborative working atmosphere, skilled colleagues who say what they think and appreciate feedback, and high-quality work.

We are looking for an experienced Fire Safety Engineer skilled in CFD modelling to work on the fire simulation part of our projects.

About the role

As our new Fire Safety Engineer, you will take part in many projects needing fire simulations to quantify the effects of fires on evacuation times, structures, or the space around. You will be part of project teams working either for a client or within a consortium in an R&D project. You will meet many different application fields and can one day work with fire scenarios on board a ship, the next day with fire scenarios in a power plant. The projects you will work on can relate to risk analysis, technology demonstration, product development, or the development and validation of CFD fire models for specific applications.

Very often, you will work with data obtained from fire tests performed in our own facilities, hence increasing real-life applicability of your results and providing more accurate conclusions.

Your goal is to ensure high-quality fire simulation results and to support the project teams you will be part of with CFD expertise. You will have to keep yourself updated on the progress of the field and keep developing your expertise.

Within your own field of expertise, you will act as a mentor for the team and can take on training for other team members.

You will report to one of the Team Leaders of the department.

Your main tasks will be:

  • Performing CFD simulations for projects.
  • Develop and validate CFD models.
  • Write reports about the work done.
  • Present your work to clients, at conferences, or internally within the company/department.
  • Train other team members in CFD modelling.

What you need to succeed

We would like to see:

  • Creative and proactive problem solver who can work independently.
  • Comfortable working in a team.
  • Curious team member who likes a challenge.
  • Good verbal and written communication.

Your qualifications:

  • 5 years’ experience with CFD modelling for fire.
  • Minimum M.Sc. in fire safety engineering, civil engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent relevant engineering education.
  • Comfortable with FDS or OpenFOAM.
  • Excellent in both written and spoken English.

In addition, it would be beneficial if you:

  • have simulated fire scenarios in contexts other than buildings.
  • have prior experience carrying out fire tests.
