The Histopathology Department of The Rotunda hospital has a vacancy for a Staff Grade Medical Scientist to join our team, reporting to the Chief Medical Scientist of Histology. The successful candidate will play a vital role in many aspects of providing a diagnostic histopathology service. Suitably experienced members of staff rotate through all areas of the lab frequently. Interested and qualified staff also participate in Quality, training, histodissection, etc. The successful candidate will also be able to join the optional 2 person 'on call' multidisciplinary service – an excellent opportunity to develop skills in multiple disciplines.

The hospital campus is located in Dublin city center and is well served by all modes of public transport. The Histopathology Department provides an evolving routine histology service (cut-up, processing, embedding, FFPE microtomy, cryomicrotomy, H&E IHC and some histochemical staining).

 

The Histology Department of the Rotunda Hospital Dublin provides a Gynecological, Obstetric and Perinatal anatomical pathology service to the Rotunda Hospital. The Rotunda Hospital Colposcopy unit is the only Colposcopy unit providing services to the National Cervical Cancer Screening Service on the north side of Dublin. The Rotunda also has a busy ambulatory gynecology unit. The department provides perinatal anatomical pathology service to the regions of North Dublin, Louth and Cavan.

 

The Rotunda Hospital Dublin is the oldest continually operating maternity hospital in the world. It is now a large tertiary referral unit, delivering 8500 to 9000 women per annum. It also provides gynaecological services such as colposcopy and hysteroscopy. The Department of Laboratory Medicine in the Rotunda Hospital was established in 1902 and has been delivering a comprehensive Pathology service ever since. It is accredited to the ISO15189 standard.

 

 

 

Essential Qualifications:

 

  1. Statutory Registration, Professional Qualifications, Experience, etc

(a) Candidates for appointment must:

 

Be registered on the Medical Scientists Register maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board at CORU.

                                              OR

Trainee / Student Medical Scientists who are on a CORU recognized course, have previous experience in an INAB ISO15189 histopathology accredited laboratory, and who have completed their clinical placements & are expected to graduate, will be considered (confirmation of progression on a course to the clinical placement stage will be required prior to commencement). Permanent appointment/employment will be subject to the candidate attaining registration as a Medical Scientist.

  

                                        AND

 

 (b) Have the requisite knowledge and ability (including a high standard of dexterity, suitability and professional ability) for the proper discharge of the duties of the office – see Job Description for details.

 

 

 

 

 

2. Annual registration

       (i) On appointment, practitioners must maintain (or obtain & maintain) annual registration on the Medical Scientists Register, maintained by the Medical Scientists Registration Board of CORU

                                        AND

       (ii) Practitioners must confirm annual registration with CORU to the HSE by way of the annual Patient Safety Assurance Certificate (PSAC)
