Chorus Master

The position as Chorus Master in DNO&B is vacant from 1. August 2025, for a fixed term of 3 years, which may be renewed for a further fixed term.

The Chorus Master reports to the Artistic Director of Opera and has full artistic responsibility for the Norwegian National Opera Chorus, which at present consists of 52 full-time singers. The Chorus Master is supported by a Chorus Administrator. 

Responsibilities include

  • Artistic development of the chorus in line with the Artistic Director of Opera’s vision and strategy.
  • Responsibility for ensuring the Norwegian National Opera Chorus maintains the highest professional standards, provides a positive working environment, and supports chorus members’ professional development and welfare
  • Preparing and rehearsing the chorus
  • Artistic and administrative dialogue with conductors and directors on individual productions
  • Artistic responsibility for chorus concerts and tours
  • Advising the Artistic Director of Opera on chorus matters
  • Planning the chorus’ musical rehearsals and season schedule
  • Recruitment of new chorus members
  • Conducting the chorus backstage as necessary

Required qualifications include

  • Broad knowledge of the opera repertoire and significant relevant experience
  • High level of proficiency in both piano accompaniment and conducting
  • Good language skills - preferably German and/or Italian in addition to English. The working language of the chorus and the opera house is Norwegian and the acquisition of a basic knowledge of the language will be required.  Support will be provided for the successful candidate.
  • Broad experience in chorus management
  • Experience of (artistic) trade union relations and consultation with union representatives
  • Good skills as a team player and communicator
  • Ability to manage a large workload effectively
  • Administrative ability
