NGI Houston is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Norwegian Geotechnical Institute. We are engaged in challenging engineering assignments both locally and globally. NGI Houston Laboratory performs both standard and advanced tests on soil samples to obtain soil properties for geotechnical engineering use. Our lab is fully equipped to perform all manner of soil tests typically required for geotechnical site investigations. We now need to increase our laboratory staff.
Assistant Geotechnical Laboratory Manager

Overview
 
We are looking for a dynamic assistant geotechnical laboratory manager to join our expanding office in Houston. Candidates must be able to contribute positively to our projects and to interact effectively with our clients and our Houston, Oslo and Perth teams. Candidates must be reliable and systematic, with the ability to work independently and in a team. Good communication skills are a must. 
 
Our main focus is the offshore energy sector, however, building and infrastructure experience will be considered favorably, as our laboratory tests soils from onshore and offshore locations worldwide. 
 
The primary place of work will be NGI's office in Houston. Occasionally, travel will be required to other NGI offices in Oslo or Perth to receive additional training and instruction, or as part of a technology exchange between the Houston office and other offices. 
 
 
Work tasks

  • Scheduling lab testing programs 
  • Manage, supervise and train lab technicians 
  • Performing advanced lab tests as needed 
  • Assisting with or manage specialized scale model testing projects 
  • Assisting with soils testing reporting 
  • Manage equipment maintenance 
  • Oversight of laboratory testing database 
  • Will be trained to substitute for the lab manager when needed. 

 
Qualifications & Experience

  • Soils' laboratory experience of 5 or more years, including advanced soil testing, or have a B.S. degree in engineering or a related science field 
  • Excellent organizational skills 
  • Proven technical competence in mathematics, mechanics and electronics 
  • Software competency: 
    - Reporting: Microsoft OFFICE (word, excel, powerpoint), and GRAPHER; knowledge of geotechnical databases (GINT, Holebase) preferable 
    - Test design: Mechanical design/ design review competency; including AutoCAD experience is preferred 
    - Testing: Computer programming competency, including: BASIC, C++, or PYTHON are preferred 
  • Applicants must have a lawful right to work in the US at the time of application 
  • Assist with advanced lab tests as needed and must develop a well-rounded knowledge of our lab testing procedures and ASTM Standards followed in our lab. 

 
Additional information

The assistant lab manager will receive test assignments from NGI engineering consultants as well as outside clients and will schedule the lab equipment and personnel required to complete the testing programs.  They will report to the Geotechnical Laboratory Manager. 
 
A well-rounded knowledge of electrical and electronic equipment will be required in order to specify, procure, setup, and calibrate new equipment for special projects. 
 
The position will require occasional lifting of objects weighing as much as 75 lbs (with appropriate safety training). Many lab tests will require moving or lifting core samples weighing as much as 50 lbs each on a repetitive basis.  
 
All personnel working in the lab, including the assistant lab manager, may occasionally be required to use or operate the following equipment: 
  • Electrical equipment or electronic instrumentation 
  • Electric bandsaw used for cutting core samples 
  • Electric drill or drill press 
  • Other electrical hand tools 
  • Pressurized vessels used in certain tests with pressures of 300 psi or more 
  • Sharp cutting utensils 
  • 1 normal Hydrochloric acid and other diluted chemicals 
  • Glassware (beakers, flasks, etc) 
  • Soil drying ovens with temperatures as high as 440 degrees C 
  • Forklift 
  • Air compressors 
  • Refrigerated containers used for storing cores. 
Once properly trained, the assistant manager will help train and direct technicians on the use of these devices, and will ensure that the proper safety equipment and procedures are being used.  
 
This position will occasionally require working more than 40 hours per week; this additional work is compensated.
