Horizon 2020 HiTech AlkCarb: 2-year postdoc in carbonatite-hosted mineralizing systems

Background 
HiTech AlkCarb is a 4-year Horizon 2020-funded project that aims to develop new geomodels for critical metals and minerals (e.g. REE, Nb, Sc, Ta, Zr, Hf, CaF2) in alkaline rocks and carbonatites.  Geological exploration models for alkaline and carbonatite systems are still relatively limited in scope and extent.  However, a wealth of new data and insights exist from the first two years of HiTech AlkCarb, and are ready to be synthesised into a new process-based understanding and model of critical metal deposits in alkaline rocks and carbonatites.   
 
Job description 
You will build on scientific advances from the first two years of HiTech AlkCarb to develop a new scale-and depth-dependent prospectivity mapping approach for rare earth elements and other critical metals in carbonatite systems.  The project will involve synthesising and manipulating large amounts of existing geological, geophysical, geochemical and remote sensing data collected from different carbonatite complexes in, for example, southern Germany, Malawi and Greenland.  You will collaborate closely with industry and academic project partners from across the EU, including postdocs at BGS, University of Exeter, University of Tübingen, and build their subject matter expertise into your research. The project may involve gathering additional petrophysical data from existing samples, and possibly fieldwork in Namibia.   
 
Your qualifications 
The appointment will be made on the basis of academic qualifications. Particular emphasis is placed on the following qualifications: 
 
  • PhD in geology, geoscience or geophysics. 
  • A solid understanding of mineralogy, petrology and magmatic systems is required. 
  • Basic knowledge of programming and statistics. 
  • Experience in the interpretation of geophysical and / or remote sensing data. 
  • Experience with prospectivity mapping, economic geology and carbonatite systems is considered an asset. 
  • Working knowledge of GIS and geological modelling software (e.g. ) is considered an asset. 
  • Experience in mineral exploration and industry is considered an asset. 
  • A strong ability to communicate across disciplines and work with others is required.  
 
The successful candidate will work alongside geologists and geophysicists in the Department for Petrology and Economic Geology. 
 
Department of Petrology and Economic Geology 
The activities of the Department of Petrology and Economic Geology include research on the igneous, metamorphic and structural evolution of crystalline complexes, geological mapping, and ore forming processes and mineral deposits in a variety of geological environments. A core activity for the department is to assist the Greenlandic government in developing a sustainable mineral industry by collecting and providing basic geological data for Greenland. This is done by continuously collecting and compiling geological, geophysical, geochemical, remote sensing and other types of geodata. Acquisition, processing and interpretation of large, computationally intensive data sets are key components of GEUS’ work.

The appointment procedure 
An expert academic assessment committee consisting of two internal senior researchers will make an individual evaluation of applicants’ academic qualifications, where candidates are deemed qualified or non-qualified in relation to the position advertised. Then an appointments committee decide which of the qualified candidates they want to call for a job interview. The procedure is in accordance with “Circular on the appointment and assessment of academic staff at the Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland”, Sections 4 and 7.
